Age of Conan: PvP System Update

PvP leveling is now a part of Age of Conan thanks to today's update. It is the first of a series of updates to the entire PvP system in the game. Check out what else changed today below.

With todays update the first step of the PvP System Update has been introduced to the Age of Conan live servers. Read here what exactly this includes and what future updates have in store.
PVP levels and statistics

This update now activates the PVP leveling system. You can now gain PVP levels by engaging in your normal PVP activities, be it world PVP, siege encounters or defeating your foes in the PVP mini-games. There are ten PVP levels in total that you can work through to prove your worth on the battlefield.
Your PVP stats are now also active in your character tab, keeping track of your performance in PVP.
In addition your new PVP armor ratings come into play now that the system is active. These provide additional mitigation of damage against damage that comes from other players. The new PVP armors will be the primary means of raising these ratings, although we will look to add additional means of raising these PVP defensive ratings in the future.
Diminishing Returns
Diminishing returns have also been set on PVP XP. This means that you receive less and less of a benefit from killing the same person in quick succession. This is an area that we will most likely continue to tweak and adjust over time. It is the type of feature that will require some additional feedback from the live servers to get exactly right. For the launch we have tried to set it a little conservatively to ensure that it isn't abused or exploited. That doesn't mean though that we aren't open to adjusting it further in the future once we see how people progress with the current system in place.
New Armories and PVP rewards
So other than the obligatory bragging rights what will the new PVP levels provide? That's where the new PVP specific gear comes in. Each class has a special new set of blue armor for PVP levels one to five
You will be able to visit new armory locations in all the racial hubs, these special shops stock new PVP based items for players to access. Vendors in the armories will stock you up with great new items starting as low as level twenty, as you progress through your normal levels and the PVP levels then you will find more and more accessories and armor and finally weapons that you can purchase in the armory.
Different vendors appear in the armory as you level up so be sure to check back as you progress.
PVP gear will come in all shapes and sizes. At level eighty there are new blue armor sets that are class specific, while for those not yet at the maximum level you can find an armor set for each of the armor types with upgrades available as you level up. Maximum level players will also get access to a great new set of blue weapons.
All of the PVP items introduced in this update reward players for levels one through five in the PVP progression system. New epic items that serve levels six through ten will be introduced in coming updates, and on the subject of coming updates...
Future Updates
This update is just the start of the planned PVP updates. Next up will come the PVP consequence (or Notoriety) system. Now we had hoped to include both at the same time, however the consequence system needed some extra work to be fully realized. Since we took the decision to support the idea of players being 'notorious' in PVP and including consequences for their actions we felt it was important to ensure we did it properly. We saw from the feedback on the test server that we needed to make sure there are more than just penalties to notoriety system when it arrives and want to take a little extra time to account for as many of the scenarios as possible so that the PVP game-play itself isn't diminished on the servers.
Keep your eyes peeled for more information on this over the next few weeks as we get closer to rolling out the second part of the PVP update to the test server.
Also, as mentioned above, you will see more PVP items added to the game in the form of the rewards for the PVP levels six through ten. These class specific epic armor sets will also have great new visuals and be a prestigious reward for those who battle up the PVP levels.

Age of Conan declares rules for RP, four months after launch

Better late than never? The graphically intense, atmospheric slashfest Age of Conan has had designated roleplaying servers since day one, but it doesn’t seem to have occurred to Funcom to give that status any kind of binding definition, let alone a formal code of conduct. Now, though, the exhaustive rules for what you can and can’t do on a roleplay server have been laid out.

They’re pretty much what you would expect from AoC. All names except those that gel with the Hyborian background are prohibited, so there will be no more StoneColdKillah or DARTH CONAN types running around. Some channels are content restricted.

There’s also a general injunction: ‘Do not break the RP of other players. That includes harassing them by jumping around constantly, disturbing RP events or sessions etc.’

We’re not at all sure how exactly this is meant to be implemented on RP-PvP servers. Are you not allowed to hack the head off the Aquilonian dog who ambushed you yestereve, because he happens to be engaged in an intense in-character poetic recital?

Would in-character weddings be immune to raiding parties intent on slaughtering the groom and carrying off the bride, as occasionally happened in history? Would Conan himself have to sit back and wait for the conspirators to finish roleplaying out their conspiracy to dethrone him before he could split their skulls to the teeth?

Fortunately, Age of Conan GMs have a reputation for being clued-up when it comes to roleplay.

Big Iron gets the skinny on quad-core Conan

Big Download's sardonic incubus Rafe Brox successfully ambushed Age of Conan developer Jorgen Tharaldsen at DragonCon, and demanded information about what AoC had in store for those who just love their hardware. Specifically, Big Iron wanted to know about the support AoC (and future titles, such as The Secret World) would be giving multi-CPU/multi-core systems.

French Age of Conan rap video rocks la maison

Even if the Age of Conan developers are coming in for some serious criticism of late, the players are coming up with some funky stuff. Rodion’s Je Demonte - it’s French for ‘I kick ass’, if you were wondering - is not only one of the better Age of Conan gold fanvids we’ve seen, it’s one of the only AoC gold fanvids we’ve seen. There are plenty of demos of spellweaving and the like, but not so much in the way of character video or storytelling. (If you’ve seen any that deserve a wider audience, let us know!)

So, take a look at the immaculately coiffured Rodion and his charming ladies as he tells the story of his journeys through Hyboria, beginning with his attempts to kick Kalanthes’ ass on a certain beach that we’ll all find familiar, his acquisition of the inevitable firearm, and his ending up as one of the baddest Stygians of all time. Q: Is stability a problem at all?
A: It depends on what kind of system you are playing on. The tech guys are working almost full-time on those memory leaks that cause a crash. People do experience them. Age of Conan has eight million lines of code? It's a big game. Hopefully the performance is improving. It's not just one big leak somewhere. Unfortunately, it's dozens of very small memory leaks that cause the client to run out of memory. But in terms of server stability, it's rock-solid. It's amazingly solid.

(regarding spam messages) How many of you have actually bought gold in an MMO? No one, ever? Unfortunately, it's one of those things where you think you have methods in place, but you can never completely shut these out, and I hate to say that, but what you can do is make it more difficult. At lot of places, this is what they do: they don't play the game, they find the loopholes and everything. So, we're concentrating on the game, we're concentrating on many many areas to try and improve customer service, improve the game, everything else. Their only job is to find that loophole. So just when we think we've covered our bases, it'll lessen up, then oh! there's a loophole. But we are actually working on throttling the amount of mail that players can send out. We do have ways to detect when players are spamming. And we're using that and setting up automatic processes to check the accounts and get them off the system. And also delete the emails directly from the database. So unfortunately, it sort of a learning curve for us, because every time we come up with something to fix it, they go "Oh, we're just going to change our methods."

They use roaming IPs to create new accounts, they purchase mass accounts, we see a lot of Visa frauds, a fraud Visa card can buy a hundred digital boxes, or whatever. And that means as soon as we shut down those accounts, they have new accounts to start all over again. So we are very aware of the problem, and it's actually been a pet peeve of mine for actually a long long time. Some people ask, "Why does it take so long for certain processes to happen?" It's because we're checking those to make sure they're not fraudulent before that player gets in. So unfortunately, it does affect some of the player base, and we apologize for that, but in the long run, we think it actually makes the experience of the game better.

For mail spam, the developers have been considering doing numerous things like not being able to mail the user unless you're on their friends list, or looking at the ignore list.

Q: What are you all using for a videocard? (at this presentation)
A: GeForce 8800. Anything above a GeForce 6 runs the game pretty well. I run a 7900 at work. I run it on dual monitors. It runs fine. You don't have all the bells and whistles with a 79 series, but once you get to the 8 series, everything can be on. Not the lower-end ones, but the 8800s.

Q: Alchemy. It costs me more to make anything for my guild members than it costs to buy them from a vendor.
A: We have a new guy on our tradeskills, and his job is to make tradeskills awesome. And he's got a long-term plan and he's been looking through our systems and looking through the player experience. He's working on it. He's got a lot of really cool plans on what he wants to do with Alchemy.

Q: There was mention a while back about a couple new movies involving the Conan storyline. Are you going to be drawing anything from them? Or are they drawing stuff from you?
A: From what I understand, they're looking at our game as a source of inspiration. I'm not certain that we're going to -- we're going to work together to make sure that we don't conflict, but I'm not designing things thinking "Gee I wonder if this will be in the movie". The movie guys are gonna take what they want from us.

Q: There's a limited amount of stuff to do at 80. Are you planning on adding anything to endgame content?
A: It's a double-prong question because A) One of the focuses of the dev team at the moment is making items more meaningful, and that includes the drops that the bosses have, and so forth, we wanna give people more reasons to go into the dungeons, into the content that we have. It's a two-prong question: are we adding more level 80 content, PvE especially? Absolutely. So I'm working on this sort of stuff, and we've got just a team doing dungeons at the moment. I believe there's five dungeons they're working on at the moment. This stuff will come in the next four or five content.

And also the item team, focusing on making items more useful for people. People want items to be more meaningful and more balanced as well.

Age of Conan direct download available on Steam

Age of Conan is now available for purchase and download on Steam, the direct download service run by Half-Life 2 publisher/developer Valve Software.It joins EVE Online in representing the genrein the massive digital store.

To celebrate the game’s launch, Funcom and Valve are selling the game for 10% off — at $45 instead of $50. We doubt that $5 are the difference between you buying this game and not, but if you’ve been planning to do it anyway this is a good way to go. Not only is it cheaper, but Steam will let you download it at any time, so you won’t have to worry about losing the discs.

Then again, a complete installation of AoC is more than 20 gigabytes. Maybe that’s more than you want to download. Up to you!

Mythic's Mark Jacobs really wanted to see Age of Conan succeed

MTV Multiplayer's Tracey John, speaking with head of Mythic Entertainment Mark Jacobs, has been exploring a line of questioning about the MMO industry in general. They noted the high failure rate for the genre, and the equally high expectations that are now placed on new games by fans and industry commentators. Jacobs offered up, as part of this discussion, some analysis on why Hellgate: London didn't make it, and why Funcom's Age of Conan has been having so many problems over their long first summer of launch. Of Hellgate, Jacobs noted that it's not sufficient simply to have really talented people on the team. That's a straightforward process. In addition to that, "sometimes just having talent is not enough. You need leadership and you need patience. And what's most important - something that so many developers forget - is you also need to deflate the ego a little bit."

About Conan, which the site categorizes as 'failing to deliver on promises to players, Jacobs states that he actually really wanted the game to succeed. Now, with a summer of frustrations and player unrest behind them, he thinks they're in a tight spot. Ultimately, he just wants someone to show the world that MMOs don't have to be World of Warcraft to succeed. As for Mythic, "If we don't succeed with EA behind us, the 'Warhammer' IP behind us, with one of the most experienced teams in the industry, that's not going to be good for the industry. We need to show the world that it's not just Blizzard who can make a great game, and that the audience is absolutely willing to try new things and to play a game other than 'WoW."

Age of Conan hyperlink exploit vulnerability fixed

As you very well know, Age of Conan's chat system (which the game inherited from Funcom's other MMORPG, Anarchy Online) allows the users to link to items and even post hyperlinks. Those are usually used for guild recruitment, but according to a recent publication from a security expert firm 'Independent Security Evaluators', in-game links could be used for malicious purposes as well. This affects both of Funcom's MMOs, because, as I mentioned before, they share the same chat system. Two types of attacks were possible in Age of Conan:

The so-called 'directory traversal vulnerability'. By clicking an in-game hyperlink, the player's character could be forced to 'read' (post in the 'Say' chat) a plain text file located anywhere on his computer, one line at a time - since the game interprets each one of them as a script command. If you have AoC installed in C:\Program Files\Funcom\Age of Conan, for example, a link that would make your character read a file located at C:\mysecretdiary.txt would look something like this: ../../../mysecretdiary.txt. Looks harmless enough, unless you like keeping all your passwords in a text file named passwords.txt on your desktop, or have one full of Age of Conan's emote commands - but even then, the hacker would have to guess the location of it.
The buffer overflow attack. By employing the same tactics, the hacker tricks a player into clicking a hyperlink. The game script parser cannot handle extremely long lines of text, so if the link is pointed to, for example, ageofconan.exe (a huge file), the game client promptly crashes.

Like I mentioned before, AO is also susceptible to this bug; in fact, the exploit could do much more harm there, since it actually allows the hacker to gain access to the victim's computer. This requires the player to click two hyperlinks, first of which opens an actual website and places a special cookie on his computer, and the second one, which executes the said cookie by means of previously mentioned 'directory traversal' bug. It is all demonstrated in a cool video from ISE that you can watch on YouTube below or download a high quality version from the creator's website. The poor guy in this clip gets pwned and his Anarchy Online account details are sent to the hacker.

It seems Funcom has acted on ISE's warning quickly and released patches fixing the first vulnerability in both AoC and AO. The second vulnerability is apparently still in the game though; here's what ISE guys had to say about that:

We do not believe that the buffer overflow alone currently poses a serious risk to players, but we recommend that Funcom fix it promptly so it cannot be used in any future hybrid attacks. In the meantime, we suggest that players exercise caution when downloading custom game scripts from third parties.

So, the standard stuff - find out what you're clicking before you click... And you should really get Firefox + NoScript as well and set it as your default browser instead of that outdated IE; it makes surfing much more secure.

Anyway, I haven't seen any of those links floating around in AoC. Then again, I don't really pay much attention to guild recruitment links, not to mention actually clicking. Has anyone seen people posting these, or perhaps even fallen a victim to one of those exploits himself?

RoleCraft: Roleplaying the Elements

In the worlds of roleplayers, things are constantly changing. One minute your character is enjoying a pleasant moment of quiet fishing on a lakeside, and the next minute you're being assaulted by [insert any name and number of detestable monsters here]. Roleplayers know they must be on their best to deal with the ever-changing gaming conditions, from chance meetings of other roleplayers, surprise attacks like mentioned above, drunken bar room brawls, quests and missions, and on and on. Unless your character happens to an invalid, or cursed with agorophobia or something that keeps them indoors, then there is yet another item that is probably constantly changing that is also probably much overlooked: the elements.

Let's talk about the weather, shall we? Thanks to the skill of game designers and programmers over the last ten years or so, weather effects in gaming worlds have seen an incredible amount of change and growth. I remember in the very early days of Everquest when going indoors and under cover in an attempt to get out of the rain just didn't work. The rain would fall right through the tops of houses and buildings. Thankfully that is no longer the case, at least in the MMORPGs I play. Thankfully too is that snow, ash, dust, wind and more can be experienced in games today, all of which greatly compliment the world in the minds of us roleplayers.

Weather in game has a strong possibility of affecting your character and RP, very much like real world weather affects all in contact with it. To keep it simple, it's easy to categorize what a roleplayer should be aware of with roleplaying in harmony with the weather into three headings - people, places, and things.

Climates, weather, seasons, all these things inflict great force on the varying races of people in the game world, causing them to adapt to their homeland elements in a variety of ways. Dwarves are known to be very comfortable living deep within high snow-capped mountains. Elves tend to hail from temperate forests. Trolls generally reside in lush humid jungles, while orcs dwell in barren dry lands. Look for inspiration from the real world, seek out fantasy books and movies, and even look at your own self to gain a better understanding of how races are able to live where they do. Then simply transfer that knowledge into RP for your character.

Aside from climate, geography is another matter to consider here, and is closely tied to how people handle weather. Races living near water may tend to be great swimmers, while mountain-dwelling races excel at climbing and rough terrain. Did your hunter live their younger years tracking beasts through swamps, snow, or deserts? So maybe they need assistance when attempting to track a prey though city streets? Elevations can also be considered when looking at temperatures, such as the differences in desert and jungle heat, or mountain top and deep valley cold.

What about when your character is out of his natural element? My troll voodoo priest was born in the desert lands his tribe now shares with the orcs, where he grew up learning how to live and thrive in a region far different than is normal for his race. Both jungle and desert are rather warm climates, which he is well adapted to. Cold climates are places that give him cause to be aware of his clothes and gear, which I roleplay by donning a thick long robe. Another character I play is a gnome, whose home sits in the mountains very near the home of the dwarves. Therefore, cold temperatures are of little bother to him, especially with the added RP fact of him being a fire mage. When in warmer regions, he has to make sure to ingest an abundance of water to help offset his fire magic internally, else he could overheat and spontaneously combust, a very bad thing to do. Bodies of water is another element he has to keep away from, even if they are frozen, because he emits an aura of heat that could possibly melt the ice beneath him, or cause one very nasty steam burn.

Clothes are a quick and easy way to RP with the weather. Packing common sense gear for use when traveling should be, well, common sense. The only thing I see which could hamper this RP style is the limited bag space our characters have in MMORPGs. Banks and houses do help with providing more storage space, but it does also tend to be a chore having to return there for a change of clothes for each new quest. Spells and enchantments are another very quick and easy way to handle climate control, with the added benefit of not taking up valuable inventory space. Tossing on a pair of solid boots with some kind of fire enchantment may be all your character needs to move through snowy regions, or donning a magical wide-brim hat for when it rains. It's all in the imagination!
