Have you ever heard of WoW Icecrown Citadel? Now it is calling. Can you hear it, whispering in the wind?

It’s been an imposing figure ever since Wrath was launched, a reminder of why we’re in Northrend in the first place and our ultimate goal. With WoW Patch 3.3 inching ever closer, Ghostcrawler’s revelation, although sarcastic, certainly set me thinking. We might not be facing thirty one bosses but look at the size of the place. There’s no way Arthas is rattling around there on his own. Oh no, that would be too simple. Two of those we can guess: Arthas himself and Malgyos’ resurrected mate, Sindragosa. She’s been leering at us from the login screen since day one (technically since before then actually) so for her not to be included as a raid boss is simply unthinkable. I’m wondering if she will be the Lich King’s Sapphiron.

I’m betting, while not as huge as GC originally said, that Icecrown Citadel WoW is still going to be big and complex. Probably somewhere between Karazhan and Ulduar in terms of bosses. It’s going to be epic and certainly not a walk in the park. Especially as this will be the end of the Wrath storyline and the last big patch before the next expansion, so it’s got to be a challenge that won’t be beaten in a couple of days.

So, constant readers, who do you think we’ll be facing in WoW Icecrown Citadel? Will Kel’Thuzzad return again or will we be seeing totally new bosses to test us before facing the Lich King himself?

WoW Patch 3.2.2 Mage Changes on the PTR

Now the following is the details.
Mages
Arcane Blast: The buff from using this ability now stacks up to 4 times instead of 3, and each application increases mana cost by 130% instead of 200%.
Talents
Arcane
Missile Barrage: The effect from triggering this talent now removes the mana cost of Arcane Missiles. In addition, the chance for Arcane Blast to trigger this talent is now 8/16/24/32/40%. All other listed spells continue to have a 4/8/12/16/20% chance to trigger it.
Take a moment. Digest that. Consider the implications. Then follow me past the break.
Oh my.
Holy crap.
Let’s look at the first change first. Yes, I came up with that order on my own.
Arcane Blast
Arcane Blast is stackable up to 4 now, instead of 3. The damage increase per stack remains the same, at 15%. Only the mana cost has changed, and it has actually gone down. Instead of doubling with every stack, it has gone back to something closer to the pre-Wrath era–130%. This means that the mana cost per stack now looks like this:
1st cast: 229 mana
1 stack: 297 mana
2 stacks: 387 mana
3 stacks: 503 mana
4 stacks and beyond: 653 mana
Currently, a fully stacked Arcane Blast costs you 1830 mana. This is an absolutely massive mana reduction for our major nuke. Feel free to correct my math, which was performed by me, a person for whom numbers with more than one digit are confusing and scary.
So once the patch hits, our main nuke won’t eat up nearly the amount of mana it does now, and the difference in our mana efficiency should be pretty astonishing. Our staying power will increase dramatically in long fights, and we should find that we can pick and choose when to use Evocation, instead of the current situation, where you absolutely must use it every two minutes without fail, and if you happen to get interrupted during an Evocation, you’re reduced to alternating wanding and crying like a little girl until your mana gem cooldown pops.
And it only gets better.
Missile Barrage
This is the game-changer, right here. My first fear, upon reading this change, was that they’d be taking away the gatling-gun speedy missle effect this talent currently grants. I’ve since tested it out on the PTR, though, and I can confirm that this is not the case.
Here’s the deal: On the PTR, Missile Barrage works exactly the same way that it does on the live server, only with two key differences. The first is that it completely removes the mana cost for the next Arcane Missiles you cast. Yes. I totally just typed that. Your next Arcane Missiles is free. Still fast, still powerful, still fully buffed from the Arcane Blast buff (4 times instead of 3), only also free. I only wish there were a way to italicize that even more than the font we use here at WoW.com allows. I would italicize it to the ground, baby.
The second key difference is that your chances of proccing Missile Barrage go up significantly when you cast Arcane Blast. Instead of the standard 20% chance you get from casting the other applicable spells, Arcane Blast will give you a 40% chance. That’s twice the chance, according to my math, or to be more scientific, 200% more awesome. Casting other spells will still grant you the 20% proc chance. Which of course begs the question: why would you cast anything else? You wouldn’t, that’s the answer. Also, why would you ever, ever cast a non-Missile Barraged Arcane Missiles? Let’s weigh the options here:
Option one: Costs a bunch of mana, takes 5 seconds to cast.
Option two: Costs zero mana, takes 2.5 seconds to cast. Also, gives you a back massage and makes you breakfast.
I know which option I’m picking.
So here are the implications for Arcane Mages should these changes make it through the testing process and then not get nerfed 36 hours after the patch drops. Cough.
Arcane 3.2.2
1. There will be one acceptable spell rotation in PvE: Arcane Blast x 4>Arcane Missiles (if Missile Barrage has procced). If Missile Barrage fails to proc after four consecutive 40% chances for it to do so (and we all know this will happen frequently, thank you random number generation), you will keep casting fully stacked Arcane Blasts until it does, since the mana cost isn’t prohibitive to do so.
2. Arcane Barrage will have no further use in PvE, except as a way to continue to DPS on the move. This saddens me, since it’s a 51 point talent, and it’s an awesome spell, and I love it dearly. I pray they can find a way to make it PvE viable again, but doing so without upsetting the PvP applecart is probably going to be difficult.
3. As mentioned before, mana efficiency will go way, way up, meaning Arcane Mages will have far more leeway in how and when they choose to use Evocation and their mana gems. Long fights will no longer be the chore they currently are, and DPS will increase because we no longer have to reign in our mana usage quite as much.
4. DPS will increase overall. Significantly. I anticipate this change putting Arcane on par with deep Fire, and possibly even surpassing it. The increase from that fourth stack of Arcane Blast alone is huge.
5. In situations where a quick burn is called for, as when a boss is near death, we can now spam Arcane Blast and not run out of mana three seconds later. It’ll be sweet. A little boring, but sweet.
6. Warlocks will re-roll en mass, finally discovering that felhunters are ugly and difficult to housebreak, and having them totally doesn’t make up for the sad fact that Warlocks aren’t Mages. Also, this will only happen in my imagination, where Warlocks do things like this all the time. Other things that happen in my imagination? Frost becomes PvE viable. Everything in the videos on this page. Also, Duckie gets the girl. Every time. My imagination probably needs to be medicated, people.
And holy crap, guys, I’m not even taking into account Glyph of Arcane Blast here. 18% damage increase per stack? Times 4? Multiplied by the power of awesome? That equals yay. Yes, indeed.

A WoW Power Leveling Guide From 71-80

Huh, guys, another new day here. Now here is a wow power leveling guide for you to tell you how to level your char from 71 to 80 fast.

Well, obviously this won’t be geared towards players who use Paladins as their main. One of these days, maybe next week, we’ll probably get around to talking about Crusader’s Coliseum and the Trial of the Crusader. Then again, didn’t you just one-shot all those bosses last week? Anyway, just for this week we’ll pick up where we left off when we last hit Level 70 (or so). The excitement seems to be pointing towards the next batch of content - from reawakened black dragons, to the inevitable opening of Icecrown, and of course, the advent of a new expansion.

Actually, there couldn’t be a better time to dust off that Paladin alt (probably once your main, who knows?) because… well, what class would you really want to bring to a face off with the freaking Lich King? A class that knows how to lay the smackdown with the freaking Light, that’s who! Besides, when they finally allow paid race changes some months after the next expansion (come on, you didn’t really think they’d let you pay to switch to a max level Goblin or Worgen right off the bat, did you?), wouldn’t you want a high level Paladin standing at the ready to be transformed into a badass werewolf? Alright, I’m just teasing you. It probably won’t happen, but if it did, at least you wouldn’t be kicking yourself in the head. Ok, so, you’re Level 70 and sailing off to Northrend. Let’s hit it.

First things first
I mentioned this was the perfect time to write this
wow power leveling guide — aside from the electric monkey prods of our head honchos telling us to update or complete our leveling guides, that is — because Patch 3.2 made it infinitely easier to level. Yes, Blizzard actually wants you to blaze through all that content they worked so hard on. In writing this guide, I’ve taken into account two possibilities: one, that this is your first character (congratulations and thank you for choosing the Paladin, you don’t know what you’re missing), and two, this is an alt whom you need to get up to speed.

If this is your first character, It’d be a good time to note that WoW Patch 3.2 allowed characters to learn Expert Riding (flying mounts) at Level 60. If you haven’t learned it yet, go visit your nearest trainer and pick it up for 800 Gold (faction discounts apply). At Level 68, you can technically enter Northrend and start picking up quests. The flying won’t be particularly useful to first characters, but will be extremely useful to alts whose Level 80 main characters can purchase the Tome of Cold Weather Flight, an account-bound consumable book, from Hira Snowdawn in Dalaran. Additionally, alts can benefit from heirloom armor and weapons to make everything faster. If you can afford the items, buy them, pass them on. As you can tell, Blizzard wants first timers to savor the content and for veteran players to get their butts to the endgame.

The Starter Zones
Unlike the crowded starting area of the Outlands, Blizzard designed two starter zones for Northrend. They’re essentially the same in terms of number of quests and mobs, so generally the experience gain rate would be the same. It boils down to a choice of doing much of your adventuring in a snowy, dreary, uh, tundra or a lush and verdant, um, fjord (never mind what Wikipedia says, the staff of WoW.com are mandated to pronounce it as fah-geord). Personally, I went for the fjord.

Note that skipping the Borean Tundra means skipping the D.E.H.T.A. quest line entirely and missing out on some Achievements. But that’s alright, those guys are self-righteous, anyway, and a true servant of the Light can’t be distracted by some silly animal rights crusade! Of course, the reality is that the Borean Tundra also gives prettier shinies, such as the Axe of Frozen Death for leveling Retribution Paladins. There are also a variety of rings and necklaces, all awarded by quests in the area. The Howling Fjord has fewer cool stuff.

It used to be that zones were attractive because of the number of Undead and Demon mobs, but since Exorcism is now an equal opportunity whacking spell, it doesn’t matter so much. The only bonus is the chance to use Holy Wrath more often, and in this case, those opportunities are about the same. Finishing all the quests in a zone will grant about a level and some change. The most sensible advice? Do both zones to squeeze the most bang for your leveling buck.

Level 72 to 74 or so
You will inevitably be led to Dragonblight, where it is imperative to complete as many quests as you can in order to participate in one of the most epic and lore-charged experiences in the game. Why is it imporant to complete as many quests? Because the massively awesome Wrath Gate cinematic and all the cool stuff thereafter only unlocks after completing a whole bunch of mini quest chains. If you’re Horde, you’ll need to do the quests in Westwind Refugee Camp, Venomspite, and Agmar’s Hammer. If you’re Alliance, you’ll need to do the quest in Wintergrarde Keep and Wintergarde Mine. Once you’ve completed the pre-requisites, the faction leaders in the zone (who, incidentally, are also duking it out in the Isle of Conquest) will send you off to see dragons, treacherous undead, and flashy moves by your faction’s big shots.

At the end of the day, you’ll come away with some nice loot such as flashy pants — Wrynn’s Legplates of Carnage or the Warchief’s Legplates of Carnage (healing Paladins will need to pick up the spell power Mail) — and a nifty trinket. Completing the Wrath Gate sequence will also irrevocably phase you into a different version of Azeroth where some NPCs are no longer around. Think about this whole phasing deal for now, because it looks like it will be pretty exciting in the near future. Did I mention you should level up mostly in Dragonblight for this period? Yes, I believe I did. Until you complete the epic-est quest chain, all other on-level zones are secondary.

Level 75 and then some
When you ding Level 75, you should rush home to embrace your trainers. Not just because you’ve missed them (there’s truly very little reason to bother going back for training before this level), but because this is when you learn Shield of Righteousness. This is going to be extremely handy for
wow power leveling Holy and Protection Paladins — it’s a nice ka-pow spell on a 6-second cooldown. You’ll be using this a lot. You’ll wonder why it took you 75 levels to learn such a badass spell that scales off a freaking shield.

At Level 75, you should be headed down to Grizzly Hills, which is oddly located right after a starting area. There are lots of quests here, particularly PvP quests which I highly recommend doing not just because I’m a PvP freak but because the quests award Venture Coins, which are used to purchase some of the best Librams for this level and a bit further on. There’s the Venture Co. Libram of Mostly Holy Deeds, Venture Co. Libram of Protection, and Venture Co. Libram of Retribution which can be bought for 30 Venture Coins apiece.

If you’re averse to PvP, don’t worry. It’s entirely possible to do all the Grizzly Hills PvP quests without actually killing (or better, getting killed by) enemy players. I know, it’s kind of weird that way. If you time your questing right, you can simply pick off the relatively easy NPCs instead and risk being flagged for PvP for a short while. As a bonus, you can pick up the Grizzled Veteran Achievement to boast to your friends.

Level 76 to 77
Ok, Level 76 is a significant level because it allows you to go into Sholazar Basin. Not that anything stopped you before, but at Level 76 you get to fly there on a whirlygig. This kicks off pretty much all the quests in Sholazar Basin, which is a really good place to quest as you can do pretty much everything at the same time just by going around killing everything in sight. It’s a Hemet Nesingwary zone, what did you expect?

You can level to 77 here or in the other similar level zone, Zul’drak. The difference is that you can start quests in Zul’drak as early as Level 74, whereas you’d be puttering around doing nothing in Sholazar unless you’re Level 76. So even though I mentioned Grizzly Hills as a good area to quest, Zul’drak is just as good a place to level. Prior to Patch 3.2, it was especially attractive because of the significant number of undead roaming about.

Zul’drak is also special because you can pick up a significant weapon upgrade that should last you until Level 80 with the Ring of Anguish quest chain. You can actually start the chain at Level 75 by talking to a goblin in the Underbelly. Just be sure to bring some friends and do the chain at off-peak times to minimize quest conflicts with other groups on the same chain. At the end of it, Holy Paladins walk away with a Screw-Sprung Fixer-Upper, and Retribution Paladins get the De-Raged Waraxe. Protection Paladins should get the Chilly Slobberknocker, which sells for 15 Gold, 96 Silver, and 76 Copper.

Of course, it’s also in Zul’drak that Protection Paladins actually get one of the few blue items specifically geared for tanks, the Clutch of the Storm Giant, which is a reward at the end of the short and fun quest chain from the caged storm giant. Holy Paladins can pick up Life-Light Pauldrons from the same chain. Retribution Paladins should do the quest chain simply because I think they’ll get a kick out of slaughtering a hundred scourge and three badass undead. Between Sholazar Basin and Zul’drak, you should have enough quests to hit Level 77. If this is your first character, you should head to Dalaran and learn Cold-Weather Flying, which should cost 1,000 Gold. I told you that Chilly Slobberknocker would come in handy.

Level 78 to 80
There are two significant choices here, as Level 77 opens up two zones only accessible through flying. The first, Icecrown, assures a lot of blue item quest rewards from several short quest chains. The second, Storm Peaks, leads the way for a lengthy reputation grind to purchase the best PvE shoulder enchants. Both are excellent options and you’re likely to hit Level 80 long before you finish all the quests in either zone. Both are also phased zones which need to be completed to a degree — there will be many instances where you will be grouped with a player who hasn’t opened up that phase of the zone and will be unable to interact with you even though you’re in the same area.

Phasing technology is used the most in these two end zones, such as the opening of the Argent Vanguard and the Shadow Vault in Icecrown or Dun Nifelheim in Storm Peaks. Opening up these phases are certainly optional, but be prepared to withstand the ostracism (technologically and socially) as other max-level players partake of these phased zones.

Personally, my zone of choice is Icecrown. It is deeper steeped in Lich King lore, and there are a ton of ‘kill gajillions of undead’ quests. It also follows the travails of the game’s premier Paladin, Tirion Fordring, in a pretty epic quest chain which is, again, phased. I would rattle off the blue rewards from these zones, but at this point they would be quickly replaced by gear available at the endgame. Suffice it to say that there are substantial plate rewards every step of the way.

When finally you hit Level 80, you should once again rush to your trainer (you owe her money) to learn max ranks of key spells and the first rank of the bubbly delicious Sacred Shield. This is one of the most important spells in every Paladin’s arsenal. Mastery of Sacred Shield is a critical skill and is a good indicator of fairly decent Paladins. In particular, Patch 3.2 buffed Sacred Shield with a HoT component when paired with Flash of Light. Rule of thumb: always have it up. I mean, obviously, if you’re just chilling in Dalaran, you shouldn’t waste your mana. But during an encounter, don’t forget to use it. Sacred Shield is the last spell you learn in Wrath of the Lich King, and its mastery is an indication of experience wielding the Light.

So you’re 80, now what? You know the drill. The game is yours to play. Have fun, muck around… after all, when the next expansion is unleashed, there’ll probably be more levels to slog through. Who knows, you might even reroll. Woof, woof.
